New Canon 28mm Macro EF-M lens

Canon have announced their latest Macro lens for the EF-M range, the EF-M 28mm f3.5 Macro IS STM. The EF-M lens is designed for Canon’s series of compact system cameras that combine all the advantages of an interchangeable lens camera in a more compact form. Whilst Canon already provide a mount adapter for the M series range to open access to other EF lenses, its great to see a new addition created specific for purpose.

The lens has some good features starting with the fact that Canon claim this to be the first auto focus lens with built in macro lite. The STM on this lens, is Canon’s stepping motor system which provides near silent focusing which is great for both photography and even better for video use. The macro lite technology has two built in modes, one providing extra illumination to the front of the lens, great for removing shadows caused by equipment etc. and a second mode, which allows the illumination to come from either the left or right side which allows for balancing the lighting to get that perfect shot, or for creative use. The IS on this lens refers to a hybrid image stabilizer which has been specifically designed to minimise angle and shift shake for macro photography.

Another neat feature of this lens is the 1:1 magnification ratio which make objects appear life size in the image. It also offers a 1.2x magnification to expand beyond life size, great seeing as this lens lets you get as close as 13mm to your subject.

Whilst all these features are focusing on the macro side, its worth noting that they also make this lens very versatile as a day to day lens. Due to the way mirrorless cameras have a crop sensor, this lens provides a near 35mm focal length of 44.8mm meaning you will nice natural view point.

This lens should be available mid-June and will priced around £210.
